Ischemic Cerebrovascular Disease in Young Adults
Abstract
We evaluated 18 patients (10 males and 8 females) aged from 16 to 45 years who had ischemic cerebrovascular disease which was diagnosed by clinical and brain CT features. These young adult patients represented 8.5% of all ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. Atherosclerotic cerebral infarction was diagnosed in 7 patients. Potential cardiac causes of cerebral embolism were found in 6 patients. Cerebral infarction due to vasculitis and dural venous thrombosis associated with pregnancy was diagnosed in 4 and 1 patients, respectively.
Young adults with ischemic cerebrovascular disease are not homogenous, So extensive evaluation including detailed history for risk factors, hematologic, cardiologic, and arteriographic studies is needed.
